Choosing Your Sheets

Going to bed at night knowing you’ll get a perfect night’s sleep involves more than a luxury mattress. Your bedlinens are extremely important to creating the ideal sleep environment and it’s thus essential to first know more about the types of linens that are best for you.

Not all sheets are created equal. When you are purchasing bedlinens, you need to consider material types, thread counts and cooling properties to determine what’s going to work best for you.

When Buying Sheets, Does Thread Count Matter?

Does thread count matter when buying sheets? 600, 800, 1000.... there are so many options and for so long we've been sold the myth that the higher the count the better the quality. The truth is, NO, a higher thread count doesn’t always mean higher quality bedding.

What does thread count mean?

Thread count refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads present in one square inch of woven fabric.

Despite popular belief, there is no intrinsic value to a higher thread count number. Instead, the feel of the fabric depends on the integrity of the yarn used, the weave selected, and the quality of the finished product. Thread count is but one element in determining how a finished piece of fabric will feel.

COTTON SHEETS

Cotton sheets have been a staple in the beds of people for centuries now. It is a pure, natural material, and this means that when woven into a bedding set it makes the fabric breathable. Every night your body temperature changes as you fall asleep. This often results in waking up hot, sticky, and desperate for some cool air. Brilliantly, cotton will absorb the heat from your body throughout the night, allowing you to stay cool and dry.

Cotton is naturally hypoallergenic, so has limited association with any allergies, and won’t cause any irritation or itchiness. Long staple cotton fiber is strong, tough and not afraid to get dirty. You can rely on it to last a long time as it gets softer with each wash. A thread count of 200 or higher is sufficient to assure the weave is tight enough for a long-lasting pleasure.

YOUR TAKEAWAY

For a long time, people have advocated that thread count is the most important consideration when you decide to buy new sheets. As it stands, with so many other important details to consider that can completely override the need for a high thread count, this is probably the least vital aspect of bed sheets to consider when you go shopping and should only be a final consideration when comparing sheets that meet all your other needs.

Take into consideration how you sleep. If you tend to get too warm too quickly, you’ll want a material and weave that allow greater breathability, so your excess body heat doesn’t become trapped and leave you in a world of discomfort. However, if you tend to grow chilled quickly after going to bed, you might want to consider a heavier weave or something that helps contain body heat, like 100% Cotton Jersey knit.

Remember, your bed should be your paradise, and if it’s not the most comfortable spot in your house, it may be time to reconsider your bed sheets.
